Here is an example of a student’s view of an assignment with a marking guide where the student will upload a file.  (In your regular view and if you switch to student view, the Add submission button will not show.  It is not an accurate rendering of the student view.)

Grading

There are several options for grading an assignment and each have detailed instructions below.

  1. View all Submissions - View all SubmissionsThis link will take you to the assignment grading page where you can see the status of all students for that assignment.  This is where you can use Quick Grading (turn on at the bottom) to enter grades and save all at the bottom. and is great when there are no submissions.
  2. Downloading Student File Submissions - This is also accessed from the View All Submissions page and is ideal when you want to view the student papers offline and when ready you can use quick grading to enter the grade and/or provide a feedback file.
  3. Grade Button - The blue Grade button will take you to the individual grading page for that assignment and give you more space to provide feedback, enter the grade and if it is a pdf, view and annotate their papers or if the assignment called for online text.

View all submissions

The best place to enter grades is from the assignment itself. You have the option of entering all the grades and feedback with Quick Grading or you can click on the blue grade button to enter the individual grading page for each student.

  1. From the course home page, click the assignment name.
  1. Click View all submissions.  View all Submissions
  1. You will see a list of students.  Any files that students have uploaded will appear in the Last Modified (Submission) column.  You might need to use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the list of students to view all of the columns.

You can hide any column by clicking the box with the minus sign.  Click the box again to show the column.

Downloading Student File Submissions

Adding comments to student papers via Microsoft Word and providing feedback file.

  1. From the course home page, click the assignment name.

  2. Click View all submissions.

  3. Time-Saving Hint!  If your assignment does not have a rubric or marking guide, then click the Quick grading box at the bottom.  This option will allow you to enter all of the grades for this assignment for all students at once.  Once you have turned on this option, it will remain for all of your FoxTALE courses.

  4. In the Grading action drop down at the top of the screen, select Download all submissions.  Depending on your browser, you should be prompted to save or open the .zip file.  You might save the .zip file to your computer and then open the .zip file to see all of the students’ files.  FoxTALE appends the student’s name at the front of each file name.  See instructions here

Alternatively, you can download each student file one at a time by clicking each student’s file.  Depending on your browser, you will be prompted to open or save the file.  Save the file if you will be making electronic comments in the file.

  5. With quick grading, you can enter the numeric grade and your comments on the screen showing the list of students, or click in the Grade column to enter comments in a larger comments box.

  6. If you set Feedback files to Yes,(checked by default) then you can upload a feedback file for the student so that the student can see your response or Click the blue Grade button to open the individual grading window.  Upload your feedback file, enter a numeric grade and any additional feedback, and click Save changes or Save and show next to go to the next student.

You can upload multiple feedback files until you reach the limit set in the assignment settings.  Right click (<Ctrl><Click> on Mac) on the file name to delete a file so that you can upload a newer version of the file.

Tips on Nomenclature for File Names

  • You might ask students to name their assignment submission files with this format:
    • Last Name, First Name Course Number Assignment Name
    • Example:  Duck, Daffy BIBL 100 A Essay 1.doc
  • When you add feedback to the students’ electronic files, you might rename the files to add the word “GRADED” to the file name.  In FoxTALE, the students will be able to see their original submission file and your feedback file.  Adding the word “GRADED” helps the students to distinguish between the two files.
    • Example:  Duck, Daffy BIBL 100 A Essay 1 GRADED.doc

Tips on Providing Electronic Feedback

  • Some applications, such as Word, allow you to insert comments and/or track changes you’ve made in the student’s document.  (In Word, go to Tools > Track Changes or Review > Track Changes to track changes.)
  • When you have entered all of your feedback, go to File > Save as and save the file to the location of your choice.  Add the word “GRADED” to the end of the file name as recommended above.
  • Require students to upload their papers as PDF and you can use the built-in PDF annotator - see guide here
  • Activate the Turnitin settings and you can view students papers online in Feedback studio which gives you the ability to mark and comment electronically and is saved as a feedback file for the student to view.
