How to search for files by title or content

To search for a file in Google Drive or the Docs, Sheets, and Slides home screens, type a word or phrase into the search box at the top and press Enter.

  1. Go to the search box at the top and type a word or phraseGeneral Search in Google Drive Search Box
  2. If you want to narrow your search, click the drop-down menu arrowNarrowed Search in Google Drive Search Box
  1.  choose from these options:
    • File type: Documents, images, PDFs, etc.
    • Opens With: Drawings, Google Docs, etc.
    • Ownership: Whether the file belongs to you or someone else.
    • Ownership Tab
  2. Press Enter or click the Search button .

Using Search Operators/Commands

You can search by using phrases or commands to get more specific results.

Example:

You want to find all documents that are owned by you and shared with a specific person.  Each command should have no space before or after the colon. You can enter multiple commands separated by a single space.

Example of Searching Phrases

NOTE: it is not necessary to use the entire email address unless it is shared with someone outside of the George Fox domain, also, first or last name may not work since sharing is done by username in the email address

Documents with at least one of the words. (must be in caps)

Minus sign

Documents that exclude a word. So if you want “salsa,” but not “dancing,” use…

Example:salsa -dancing

owner:

from:

Documents owned or shared by a specific person.

Example:

owner:bob@gmail.com

from:bob@gmail.com

to:

Documents you shared with someone.

Example:  to:username

is:starred

is:trashed

Items marked with a star.

Items that are trashed



type:

Search by the type of document: folder, document, spreadsheet, presentation, PDF, image, video, drawing, form, script, and table.

Example:  type:spreadsheet

before:YYYY-MM-DD after:YYYY-MM-DD

Find items that were edited before or after a certain day.

Example:

before:2014-05-01

after:2014-05-01

title:

Search by title.

Example: title:"Conference 2014"

app:

Search for items that can be opened by a specific app.

Example: app:"Google Docs"

source:domain

(For Google Apps users only)

Search for items that have been shared publicly to the user's domain, instead of the user's default set of searchable items.

Example: source:domain
